Estate and Downsizing Cleanout Checklist

Start with paperwork

Before anything is discarded, set aside documents, photographs and anything that might carry legal or sentimental value. Once it is in the container, it is gone.

Sort into four streams

Keep, donate, sell, discard. Physically separate them into different rooms so nothing gets mixed back together.

Room-by-room order

Work top down and back to front: attic, upper bedrooms, main floor, basement, garage. Leave the garage last so it can stage donation items.

Sizing the container

A full three-bedroom home typically needs 20-30 cubic yards. If the basement or garage is packed, plan on a swap.
