Dumpster Size Guide: Choosing 10, 15, 20 or 30 Yards

A practical breakdown of what actually fits in each roll-off size.

How container sizes are measured

A 'yard' refers to a cubic yard of volume, not the length of the container. A 20 yard roll-off holds roughly 20 cubic yards of loose debris, which works out to about six pickup truck loads. Footprint matters more than most people expect: nearly every size is 8 feet wide, and the difference shows up in length and wall height.

10 yard

Best for concrete, dirt, single-room demo and small roof tear-offs. Low walls make it easy to load heavy material by hand. Roughly 12 feet long.

15 yard

The middle ground for garage cleanouts, deck removal and mid-size remodels. Still fits a standard driveway with room for a car.

20 yard

The most requested size. Handles a three-bedroom cleanout, a full kitchen remodel or a 25-30 square roof. Roughly 22 feet long.

30 yard

For whole-house demolition, new construction and commercial projects. Needs a long driveway or open job site.

When in doubt, size up

Ordering one size larger costs far less than paying for a second delivery. If you are between sizes, take the bigger one.
